Deathday

Death hangs in the air today

It went away for awhile, but came back with a vengeance

It falls as rain onto my weary face

The cold drops sting my eyes

and stain my cheeks

As I look up to its cloudy, grey guise

It is all around me, thick with memories and emotion

My heart is heavy

Each beat pounds my chest slowly like a rubber hammer

Trying to escape, yearning to be free of pain

The taste of death is in my mouth

as I watch yours open, shriveled and bloodied

Crying silently to God to save you

From the unknown place that lies ahead

As you weep in your mind

Your eyes squeezed shut

He hears you and reaches His hand down to you

and shows you the place He will take you is safe

You ask Him to save your children

Your family

From the despair of your loss

As your smile withers

And your laughter fades

We reach together in song and embrace

Trying to find your soul

Desperately hanging on to each memory

Of your happiness

and strength

We search for your face in our dreams

We listen each morning

for your voice and direction

Hoping your spirit

remains within life

I release this to you

and hope you find it at your doorstep

Wherever that is

Wherever you are

My words will find you

and touch your soul as you have touched mine

by giving me life

on your deathday
